This webinar, presented by Dr. Michele Galietta, provides an introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT is a cognitive behavior therapy that emphasizes individual psychotherapy and group skills training classes to help individuals learn (and use) new skills and strategies to develop a life that they experience as worth living. DBT skills include skills for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. This webinar provides an overview of the components of DBT as well as a discussion of how this therapy can be used to treat a variety of client problems.
This course is relevant for psychologists, psychiatrists, case managers, social workers, nurses, marriage & family therapists, alcohol & drug abuse counselors and other mental health professionals who work with individuals for whom comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatments are relevant. This course is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced level clinicians.

About Dr. Michele Galietta
Dr. Michele Galietta is Associate Professor of Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York where she served as Director of the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Program from 2005-2013. Dr. Galietta is a researcher and clinician specializing in the training, adaptation and dissemination of empirically-supported treatments to community and forensic/correctional settings. Her areas of clinical expertise include the assessment and treatment of trauma, self-harm, and suicide across the lifespan. Dr. Galietta has created specialized units and/or consulted to numerous civil, forensic, and correctional settings on risk assessment, risk management, behavioral interventions, and complex needs case formulation.
Dr. Galietta is regarded as a leading expert in the implementation of dialectical behavior therapy. Dr. Galietta is a certified DBT clinician. For over a decade, Dr. Galietta served as a principal trainer for Behavioral Tech, LLC, the company founded by the developer of DBT, Dr. Marsha Linehan. Dr. Galietta has consulted to over 100 agencies in the US and abroad on DBT initiatives. She has worked extensively in public sector settings including state psychiatric hospitals and jails, prisons, and juvenile justice settings. She was principal investigator of an NIMH funded trial of DBT for individuals charged with interpersonal violence or stalking and authored the article, “Adapting DBT for the Treatment of Psychopathy.” She has conducted trainings for New York City Police Officers on mindfulness, communicating with mentally ill individuals, and hostage negotiations. Dr. Galietta has appeared on CNN and Court TV, and has been cited in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time Magazine, and other media outlets.

DBT Certification is available through the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification (DBT-LBC), a non-profit organization whose purpose is to develop certification standards for clinicians and DBT programs in order to promote the availability of competently delivered, effective DBT. It is also the one and only, treatment-developer-approved DBT Certification program in the US.
Here are the steps to become obtain your DBT Certification.
1. DBT-Related Educational/Training Experiences
DBT-LBC requires 40 didactic training hours specific to DBT. You can take your 40 hours of courses online and ConCEPT has two courses that make up 30 hours of the 40 hours required.
DBT Skills Training – 20 hours and is a requirement for certification
Forensic Applications of DBT – 10 hours
2. Clinical Experience in DBT
The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification requires work sample review. You can contact us to arrange expert DBT consultation services in this area.
3. DBT Team Experiences
The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification requires a total of 12 months of participation in one or more DBT Consultation Teams and current participation on a DBT Team. You can contact us to assist you with creating and developing a team.
4. DBT Skills Knowledge/Experience
The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification requires requires three items in the domain of DBT skills knowledge/expertise.
Read Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder by Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP (1993)
Complete all the homework assignments in the skills training manual
Teach or participate as a student in all modules of skills training OR teach all DBT skills within individual therapy and coach clients in the application of the skills.
The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification requires completion of a written exam.
6. Work Product Demonstration
The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification requires case conceptualization and three videos demonstrating your work. Expert consultation is also available for your DBT program or clinic.
7. Mindfulness Experience
The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification requires a mindfulness retreat and/or at least one formal training in mindfulness.
