Program Description

This course on Interviewing Skills for Violence Risk Assessment and Management is presented by Dr. Kelly Watt. The quality of violence risk assessment and management plan depends heavily on the quality of the information on which it is based. Interviews are an essential component of the information base for a violence risk assessment and the information collected through an interview serve to inform both findings and opinions. At the same time, good interviewing skills can also serve as an important intervention strategy related to managing the risk of a perpetrator or increasing the safety of a victim.

This course focuses on reviewing foundational issues related to conducting violence risk assessment and management interviews and provides a discussion of various styles, techniques, and questions that can be used to gather data during a clinical interview. It will also focus on special issues that arise within this context including current mental status, mental disorder, violent thoughts, and malingering. Participants will be given an opportunity build their skills in this area through practice cases.

The fee for this training program is $500 and includes all materials and worksheets. In addition, case studies and other case-relevant materials are provided for training purposes. Participants should expect to commit approximately 20 CE hours to completing this training program.Throughout the training program there will be quizzes that must be passed with a 70% in order to advance in the course. Once the course is completed participants will complete a course evaluation and then will be able to print their certificate of completion.

This course is relevant for mental health professionals who conduct forensic evaluations or who intend to add forensic evaluation to their practice. This course is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced level clinicians.

About Dr. Kelly Watt

 
Kelly A. Watt, PhD, works as a Threat Assessment Specialist at Protect International and is a member of the Mental Health, Law, and Policy Institute at Simon Fraser University in Canada.
 
Dr. Watt is the editor of the Intelligence newsletter which is disseminated on behalf of threat assessment professional associations in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific, and that provides recent advances in research, practice, and the law related to threat assessment around the globe. She also currently serves as a coordinator of a special interest group for the Canadian Association of Threat Assessment Professionals.
 
Dr. Watt’s work focuses on conducting assessments, providing training, and developing, implementing and evaluating strategies related to preventing, assessing, and managing violence. She has extensive experience applying these skills in a variety of sectors including, general workplaces, criminal settings, and civil settings. She specializes in intimate partner violence and intimate partner homicide.
 
Dr. Watt is the co-author of over 100 journal articles, book chapters, research reports and conference presentations concerning violence risk assessment and management, domestic violence related homicides, and coordinated community responses. She has conducted over 50 workshops on violence risk assessment and management, and victim safety planning around the world.
