Program Description

This workshop on Evaluation for Workplace Disability is presented by Lisa Drago Piechowski. This workshop provides a conceptual framework and practical strategies for forensic evaluations in matters involving disability status such as ADA, disability insurance, and social security. The workshop will begin with an overview of various types of disability cases with an emphasis on the underlying legal context, including recent changes to social security regulations. Next, the basis for the evaluation of disability will be explored focusing on functional assessment. Specific subtopics include avoiding ethical pitfalls, understanding the role of diagnosis, assessing dissimulation, and identifying examiner-related threats to validity. This will be followed by a discussion of practical strategies for designing an effective assessment, organizing and weighing data, and communicating the findings. Participants will have the opportunity to practice these skills through in depth case studies including background information, test data, and collateral information.

This workshop is an In-Person Professional Training Program. The fee for this workshop is $500 and includes all materials and worksheets.  In addition, case studies and other case-relevant materials are provided for training purposes. To earn CE’s, you will have to complete a workshop evaluation for this In-Person Professional Training Program. Participants will earn 14 CE hours for completion once they have completed these requirements. Each participant will be given their workshop evaluation upon completion of the workshop. Intended Audience

This workshop is intended for professionals that want to enhance their understanding and best practices of workplace disability, including those working in criminal justice, security, health care, social service, education, and human resources settings. State of California Qualified Medical Evaluators (QME) or California Medical Evaluators, Inc. will also enhance their understanding of best practices. This webinar is for beginner, Intermediate, and advanced level clinicians.

Upon completion of this training program the trainee will be able to:

– Describe how issues of cultural diversity can impact the examinee’s presentation in a disability evaluation
– Describe strategies for the assessment of malingering in disability evaluations
– Describe evaluation data presented in two case studies

About Dr. Lisa Drago Piechowski

 
 
Lisa Drago Piechowski, Ph.D., ABPP, a board certified forensic psychologist (ABPP), has been in practice for more than twenty years. Specializing in civil forensic matters, Dr. Piechowski has a particular interest in employment-related cases including disability, wrongful termination, sexual harassment, ADA, fitness for duty, and workplace violence. In addition to her civil work, she is a forensic examiner for the State of Maryland conducting court-ordered competency and criminal responsibility evaluations.

Dr. Piechowski is the author of the book Best Practices for Forensic Mental Health Assessment: Evaluation of Workplace Disability as well as a number of book chapters and articles on topics related to personal injury, fitness for duty, ADA, psychological assessment, and disability. She has provided professional training on these topics for the American Psychological Association, the American Bar Association, the American Academy of Forensic Psychology, and the British Psychological Society.

Dr. Piechowski served on the Taskforce for the Revision of the Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology, as chair of the American Psychological Association Committee on Professional Practice and Standards, and as co-chair of the American Psychological Association Committee on Legal Issues. She is the past-president of the American Board of Forensic Psychology, a past executive board member of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology, and serves as an examiner for board certification in forensic psychology.

In addition to her private practice in Maryland, Dr. Piechowski is an adjunct professor of clinical psychology at the American School of Professional Psychology—Northern Virginia, where she teaches courses in ethics, psychological assessment, and forensic psychology.
